"Our day together focuses on developing our awareness of the decisions that we make when improvising, so that we can understand and shape our improvised practices with greater attention to what we are doing and why we are doing it.

We will take two different approaches to using improvisation, both of which encourage you to play; test out and develop your own ideas, and work in solo, trio and ensemble forms.

In the morning, we will look at how to refine the creative decisions that we make whilst we are improvising, which will feed into the rest of the day. We will investigate a strategy that uses improvisation to generate and structure movement material for a ‘set’ performance, through which you will develop set duets. After lunch, we will play with a range of approaches that develop improvisation as a performance mode, which will include some voice work too. We will close with an ensemble improvised performance."

Sally Doughty has been choreographing and performing since the early 90s and has performed in USA, Mexico, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Estonia and UK. She has developed an international reputation as a facilitator and performer of improvisational practices and has represented the UK in an on-line conversation with improvisers from Australia and India. She is published in variously and has contributed a book chapter for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Improvisation. Sally is produced by Dance4 and funded by Arts Council England to develop an improvised performance, titled Renaissance, for mid-scale venues. She is currently co-researcher in two projects: the identity of hybrid dance artist-academics working across academia and the professional arts sector: and the dancer’s body as a living archive. Sally is Head of Dance at De Montfort University, Leicester, where she leads MA/MFA Performance Practices and MA Arts.
